Sulfathiazoles are organic sulfur compounds that have been used as short-acting sulfonamides. Objective: Antibacterial sulfathiazoles (20 g/ L) began to degrade between day 31 and day 38 in one of two batch reactors containing different wastewater substrates. During nitrification, sulfathiazole degrades much faster than sulfamethoxazole or sulfadimethazine (S3). At pH9, the recovery of sulfathiazole standard slurry sample was 64%. Sulfathiazole had a pKa of 7.1 and retention time (tR) of 7.8. The S/N value of sulfathiazole was higher than 100 at 1 mg/kg level. The adsorption of sulfathiazole on inorganic adsorbent showed obvious pH dependence, consistent with the adsorbent morphology and adsorbent charge characteristics. The adsorption of sulfathiazole cations to clay minerals is the most important, followed by neutral species.
